Folly Dolly Falls

The waterfall itself is modest - nothing like the thundering cascades you'll find further north - but that's rather the point. Folly Dolly Falls, just outside Holmfirth, is the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident, which is precisely when it's most rewarding.

It's a short walk from the road through proper Yorkshire moorland, and the falls emerge from the landscape with a quiet charm. The water drops into a small pool, ideal for paddling if you've got kids in tow, though the rocks are slippery and the water's cold enough to steal your breath. The surrounding woodland is thick enough to feel tucked away, even when you're barely twenty minutes from the town centre.

This works best as a leg-stretch during a wider exploration of the area rather than a destination in itself. Spend an hour here, then push on to explore Holmfirth's textile heritage or the bigger attractions nearby. If you're based at Secret Valley Escapes or Holme Valley Camping just down the road, it's an obvious afternoon detour - close enough that you won't waste half a day getting there.

Walkers will appreciate it. Families with young kids will too, provided you don't mind damp trousers. Photography types should visit when the light's low and soft, not in harsh midday sun. The falls aren't dramatic enough to justify a special journey on their own, but they're well worth the walk if you're in the neighbourhood.
