Foel Dinas

The walk up Foel Dinas from Dolgellau is straightforward enough, but the summit rewards you with views that stretch across the Mawddach estuary and down to Barmouth. On a clear day it's magnificent. The peak sits at 862 metres, which means the climb is proper steep in sections - nothing technical, but it'll get your legs working.

Most people tackling this will be walkers who've got a bit of fitness. It's not a casual stroll, and you'll want solid boots because the paths get boggy after rain. Allow three to four hours for a round trip from the car park, depending on your pace. The reward isn't just the view though - you get a real sense of being up in the Welsh hills without the tourist crowds you'd find on Snowdon.

Families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike will find it manageable. Younger children might struggle with the length and the exposed sections near the top. It's free to walk, naturally enough, since it's open moorland.

If you're based at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan Park nearby, this makes a cracking day out. The park's only five miles away, so it's ideal for using as your base for exploring the Dolgellau area. The town itself has shops and cafes for pre or post-walk supplies. Summer's the best time to go - winter conditions can turn this into something far more serious than a Sunday walk.
