Foel Benddin

The walk up Foel Benddin from Dolgellau is properly modest - nothing like the Alpine slog you'd get on Cader Idris across the valley, but that's rather the point. This peak sits at 902 metres and rewards you with views that punch well above its weight class. On a clear day you're looking south towards the Rhinogydd and west across to the Snowdon massif. The route itself takes around two hours there and back from town, winding through rough moorland and rocky outcrops that feel genuinely wild without being unnecessarily technical.

For fell walkers after something achievable in an afternoon, it's excellent. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though don't bring toddlers expecting a stroll. The ground's uneven and boggy in places - proper Welsh hill country. There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, so bring water and a decent map or GPS. Free to climb, obviously. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the whole experience; midday just looks grey and ordinary.

Foel Benddin fits nicely into a park-based holiday around Dolgellau. Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park sits less than six miles away, making this a logical half-day venture between longer days exploring Cader Idris or tackling the lakeside walks nearby. The peak doesn't take much out of you, which leaves energy for other things. Worth doing, though don't expect drama.
