Flusco Pike

The walk up Flusco Pike is a proper little leg-stretcher just south of Penrith, nothing flashy but genuinely satisfying if you're after something between a stroll and a proper fell hike. The summit sits at 1,518 feet, which means real views across the Pennines without requiring mountaineering experience or special kit.

You'll get walkers who know the Lake District well making for this one - it's the kind of peak that doesn't clog up on weekends like some of the bigger names. The ascent takes roughly 90 minutes from the bottom, and the path is clear enough even when the ground's wet. On a decent day the visibility stretches across Penrith and down towards Matterdale.

There's no charge to walk it. Start early if you can, particularly in winter when the light goes by mid-afternoon. Allow three hours for a round trip if you're taking it steady with a breather at the top.

If you're camped at Waterfoot, Beckses, or Park Foot - all within a couple of miles - you can have this bagged before lunch and still have the afternoon free. It works well combined with other local walks around the Eden Valley, though it's easy enough to do as a standalone half-day outing. Not a bucketing-rain sort of walk; pick a clear morning and you'll understand why folk bother with it.
