Fiendsdale Nab

The walk up Fiendsdale Nab rewards you with proper views across Lancashire moorland - the kind of place where you can actually see your breath on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but that's rather the point. The climb from Preston side is steady without being brutal, taking most people around an hour to the top depending on fitness and how often you stop to look back down the valley.

What you get up there is worth the effort: rolling countryside spreading out in all directions, and on a decent day you can pick out the distant hills. The walk itself cuts through bracken and rough grass, occasionally boggy underfoot if there's been rain, so proper boots matter. Walkers will take to it immediately. Families with older kids can manage it fine, though younger ones might find the featureless terrain a bit dull - there's no waterfall or cave to aim for, just the summit.

The peak sits well within reach of Brickhouse Caravan Park, just over four miles away, making it a natural half-day out if you're based there. Claylands, a touch further at six miles, works too if you don't mind a slightly longer drive. Both parks offer decent facilities if you're planning a few nights exploring the Lancashire uplands.

Go on a clear morning before the clouds roll in. Midweek beats weekends if you want the fell to yourself.
