Ffridd Rhos

Ffridd Rhos sits about twenty minutes' walk from Dolgellau, a proper little mountain that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards you for the effort. The climb is straightforward enough - steep in places, but nothing that'll leave you gasping if you're reasonably fit. What you get at the top is the thing: views across the Cader Idris massif and down into the Mawddach Valley that make the slog worthwhile.

It's the kind of walk that suits families with older kids or anyone after an hour's decent leg-stretching without committing to a full fell day. The summit itself is modest - no cafe, no facilities, just you and the view. Go in good light, though. When cloud rolls in (which it does often up here), you'll see precisely nothing but damp air.

Couples staying at Graig Wen or Hendre Mynach - both within striking distance - could knock this out as a morning walk before lunch back in Dolgellau. It pairs nicely with a stroll down to Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls later if you're still hungry for the outdoors. The whole thing feels like proper Welsh hillwalking without the drama of tackling Cader Idris itself.

Timing-wise, allow ninety minutes up and back, longer if you're meandering. Wear decent boots - the ground gets boggy after rain - and bring layers. The weather can turn on a sixpence up here.
