Ffridd Arw

The walk up Ffridd Arw from Bala isn't dramatic, which is precisely why it works so well. You're looking at a steady climb through proper Welsh moorland, the kind of terrain that rewards you without demanding rock-climbing skills or specialist gear. The peak itself sits at just over 600 metres, and on a clear day you get sweeping views across the Bala Lake area and into the surrounding valleys.

This is walkers' territory rather than a destination for thrill-seekers or families with young children. The route takes about two hours there and back depending on your fitness, and the terrain underfoot is mixed - boggy in places after rain, which happens fairly often around here. Wear decent boots. The path isn't waymarked brilliantly, so an OS map and a bit of map-reading confidence help.

Why bother? Because it's the sort of walk you actually finish feeling like you've earned something. The views are proper, not Instagram filtered. You'll see very few people up there, which matters if you're after some genuine quiet. Bala itself is just five miles away, so it slots neatly into a wider exploration of mid-Wales walking territory. The nearby Tyn Cornel Camping offers a solid base - it's close enough that you could tackle Ffridd Arw as a morning mission before breakfast rather than a full-day expedition.

Bring waterproofs. This is Wales. And frankly, that's half the appeal.
