Featherbed Moss

The walk up Featherbed Moss from Greenfield is proper Pennine moorland - grassy, windswept, and genuinely satisfying once you've made the effort. It's not a dramatic summit by any means, but the views across the valleys toward Saddleworth really do justify the trek.

You're looking at a good two hours up and back, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath on the steeper sections. The path itself is well-trodden and clear enough, though it gets boggy in places after rain - waterproof boots aren't optional. On a clear day, there's something about standing at the top of a Pennine moor that makes you forget how much your legs ache. The Manchester sprawl feels a world away.

This is absolutely a walkers' destination. Families with young children might find it a bit of a slog; teenagers who actually enjoy hiking will get on fine with it. The summit isn't cluttered with crowds or infrastructure - you get the fell, the view, and your own thoughts. That's either exactly what you want or not at all.

If you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park just down the road, Featherbed Moss is a logical half-day outing. Whitegate Leisure and Secret Valley are a touch further out, but still within easy driving distance of Greenfield. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud rolling in, and bring a flask. The top is exposed, so even mild weather can feel properly chilly.
