Farm Hill

The walk up Farm Hill rewards you with views across the Sussex Weald that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak - more a proper hill than a mountain - but that's rather the point. From Petworth, you're looking at a straightforward ramble that takes about an hour each way, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to admire the landscape.

This is walker territory. The views alone justify the effort, and on a crisp autumn morning or spring afternoon, it feels like you've got the Weald to yourself. Kids will manage it without complaint if they're the type who enjoy countryside rather than theme parks. Bring a picnic. Seriously.

The nearest town is Petworth, which is useful - you can grab supplies there before heading out. Several holiday parks sit within a few miles: Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Camp and Touring site at Old Farm Slindon are both close enough that you could base yourself for a week and explore the surrounding hills without faffing about.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no entrance fee that we can find. It's just a hill you walk up. Allow two to three hours for the whole outing if you include time at the top. Best visited when the weather's settled - on a grey, drizzly day you'll see roughly fifty metres before giving up. Works beautifully as part of a broader walking itinerary across the South Downs.
