East Wood

East Wood sits on the edge of Petworth, a proper Sussex forest that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards anyone who bothers to explore it. The woodland is dense enough to feel properly remote even though you're minutes from town - mature broadleaves, quiet paths, and the kind of dappled light that makes you remember why you came on holiday in the first place.

It's ideal for walkers who want something straightforward rather than dramatic. There are no massive views or heritage attractions here, just good forest air and enough trails to keep you occupied for a couple of hours. Families with older kids will do fine; younger ones might lose interest unless they're into spotting wildlife or collecting interesting sticks. The terrain is gentle - no brutal climbs - which means you can take it at a leisurely pace without your legs complaining afterwards.

As for practical bits, it's free to access and open at all hours as far as I can tell. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring your own water. Spring and early summer are the best times - the woodland floor comes alive and the light is beautiful. Autumn's also decent if you like moodier conditions.

If you're camping at any of the nearby sites - Wakestone & Wild Glamping or Wild Boar Wood are both within striking distance - East Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon activity without the faff of driving somewhere else. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's the kind of place that reminds you why you went to Sussex in the first place.
