Bignor Roman Villa

The Roman mosaics here are genuinely extraordinary - you're standing in front of 1,600-year-old floors that somehow survived eighteen centuries of English weather and agricultural use. Bignor Roman Villa is what remains of a substantial country estate, probably owned by a wealthy Romano-British landowner, and the site preserves some of the finest mosaic work found north of the Alps.

What you actually see are the excavated foundations and rooms, many of them covered by protective buildings so the mosaics don't deteriorate further. The geometric patterns are intricate and strikingly preserved in places - blacks, whites, reds and ochres still vivid. There's a small museum on-site with finds from the dig and context about how these villas functioned as working farms, not just pleasure residences.

It's worth a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested in Roman Britain. History enthusiasts will find it absorbing; casual visitors might feel it's a bit sparse without a guide. The location near Petworth is pleasant - rolling Sussex countryside - and it works well as part of a wider South Downs walking trip rather than a destination in itself.

Camping nearby, you've got South Downs Caravan Park just five miles away, which is decently rated and makes a sensible base for exploring the area. The site itself is free to access as far as I can tell, though it's worth checking ahead as opening arrangements can be variable. Go midweek in summer if possible - it won't be crowded and you'll actually hear yourself think about what you're looking at.
