Farchynys

The walk up Farchynys from Dolgellau is one of those routes that feels properly rewarding without being a full-day slog. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards - nothing that demands technical kit or serious fitness - but the views across the Mawddach estuary make the effort worthwhile.

You'll find the trailhead easily enough from Dolgellau town centre. The ascent is steady rather than punishing, climbing through moorland and conifer woodland before opening out onto rougher terrain as you near the summit. On a clear day you get sight lines all the way to Cader Idris to the south and across to the Rhinogydd range. The peak itself is a bit anticlimactic - just a cairn and some rocks - but the sense of elevation and exposure makes it feel bigger than it is.

This suits fell walkers and families with decent boots and stamina more than casual strollers. Allow two to three hours return depending on your pace. Go in decent weather; cloud rolls in fast here and there's not much shelter once you're above the tree line.

If you're based at Graig Wen Camping or Hendre Mynach just outside Dolgellau, this fits perfectly into a morning walk before lunch. It pairs well with exploring the town's independent shops and cafes afterwards. The route isn't crowded even in summer, which is refreshing.
