Eddingtonhill Plantation (south)

The southern section of Eddingtonhill Plantation is proper woodland - the kind where you can actually breathe. Just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed, this forestry block offers decent walking without the crowds you'd find at more famous Northumberland spots. The trees are dense enough to feel like genuine escape, and the paths are well-trodden if unremarkable. You're looking at mixed conifer and broadleaf woodland, so it changes character depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells and birdsong; autumn turns everything copper and gold.

Walkers get the most from this place. It's not a destination in itself - more a proper walk if you've got an hour or two to spare while based nearby. The terrain is fairly gentle, which makes it good for families who don't want scrambles or steep climbs. Kids won't be bored if they're the exploring type, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Come expecting forest, not attractions.

It sits well within reach of several caravan sites. Ord House Country Park, just 6.3 miles away, offers five-star accommodation and makes an excellent base - you could walk here one afternoon without faffing about. Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site and Haven Berwick Holiday Centre are both within easy driving distance too. Free access, as far as I can tell, though you should check locally as forestry plantations sometimes impose restrictions. Early morning visits are worth the effort - you'll have the paths to yourself.
