Dyke Wood

Twenty minutes' walk from Bridlington's seafront bustle and you're in proper woodland - the sort of place that makes you wonder why you didn't come sooner. Dyke Wood is a small but genuine forest tucked away near the coast, with paths that wind through mature trees and enough green to feel genuinely away from it all without needing a car journey.

It's straightforward walking territory. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, mostly, and the paths are easy enough for families with younger kids, though it's not a massive place - allow an hour at most unless you're the type to sit on logs and read. Dog walkers clearly love it, and you'll spot plenty of reasons why: there's space to let them off the lead without worrying they'll end up in someone's garden.

For a caravan holiday based at Bridlington Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or one of the seafront parks nearby, Dyke Wood works as a decent half-day break from the beach routine. It won't blow your mind - the trees are nice but this isn't ancient woodland with a story to tell - but it's the sort of place that stays pleasant in your memory because it was simple and refreshing.

Go on a clear day when the light filters through properly. Rain makes it a bit grim. Bring a packed lunch if you want to make an afternoon of it, though I'd grab a coffee from Bridlington first.
