Dunstable Downs

The chalk escarpment that rises above Dunstable is proper walking country. Walkers will get the most out of it, and it's genuinely free to roam. The proximity to Whipsnade Zoo means families often combine a morning here with an afternoon at the zoo, which works well enough. If you're based at one of the nearby sites like Merlin Farm Camping, this becomes an easy morning expedition before heading elsewhere. The wind can be relentless up there, so bring a windproof even in summer. Winter offers clearer views but fewer creature comforts on the exposed hilltop. Worth the detour if you're in Buckinghamshire and fancy some proper downland walking rather than woodland trails.
