The walk into Dunkenhalgh from Clitheroe is flat and manageable - you're following the River Ribble through proper Lancashire countryside without the stress of steep gradients. Once you're in the reserve itself, it's woodland and wetland in equal measure: the kind of place where you'll actually spot things if you go early and stay quiet. Herons, kingfishers if you're lucky, and in spring the banks fill with wild garlic.

It's not a destination that'll keep restless kids entertained for hours, but families who like gentle rambling and a bit of wildlife spotting will find it worthwhile. Birdwatchers come here seriously - bring binoculars and a decent field guide. The wetland areas mean you'll want waterproof boots unless you've had weeks without rain.

Admission is free, and you can easily spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed. The best time is early morning when the birds are active and you've got the place to yourself. Summer weekends can get busy with day-trippers from Manchester.

If you're staying at Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley or Pendle View just down the road, this makes a logical morning outing before heading somewhere bigger - Pendle Hill is within striking distance, as is the Ribble Valley's market town bustle. It's one of those reserves that rewards patience rather than spectacle, which means it's either absolutely your thing or you'll wonder why you bothered. Personally, I'd go.
