Drumburn Hill

The walk up Drumburn Hill takes about forty minutes from the car park, and on a clear day you'll see right across to the Solway Firth. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District jobs further north - but that's partly why it works. You get genuine views without the crowds, and the climb is steep enough to feel like you've earned it without being a slog.

The path is well-defined, muddy in patches, and passes through mixed woodland before opening onto moorland towards the summit. From the top you're looking down at Landis and the surrounding Dumfries & Galloway landscape, which has that gentle, rolling quality rather than stark Highland drama. Walkers will appreciate the relative quietness and the straightforward route. Families with primary-school age kids should manage it fine, though teenagers might find it a bit mild. The real draw is the solitude and the light - I went at late afternoon and the slant of sun across the hills was proper lovely.

Allow two hours return if you're taking your time and stopping for photos. It's free to walk. The nearby caravan sites - Landis Farm CL is closest at just over three miles away - make it a sensible half-day jaunt alongside a park-based holiday. Criffel View and Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site both offer easy access if you're basing yourselves locally. Worth doing, though don't expect your breath taken away. It's the kind of walk that grows on you rather than hits you immediately.
