Sweetheart Abbey

The red sandstone ruins of Sweetheart Abbey rise from a quiet corner of the Dumfries & Galloway countryside like something from a Gothic novel. Founded in 1273, this Cistercian monastery was built by Lady Devorgilla of Galloway in memory of her husband - she even kept his embalmed heart in an ivory casket, hence the name. Walking through the grounds, you get a genuine sense of medieval devotion. The abbey church's great window still stands, frame intact but glassless, and the stonework has a raw, romantic quality that sanitised restorations can't touch.

It's the sort of place that speaks to history enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates monastic atmosphere without the crowds you'd find at more famous Scottish abbeys. The grounds are spacious enough that you won't feel hemmed in, and there's a real stillness about the place. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. Admission is free, which feels like you're getting away with something.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks near Landis - Landis Farm CL or Criffel View are practically on the doorstep - this is well worth the short drive. Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site, three and a half miles away, makes a good base too. The abbey pairs nicely with Caerlaverock Castle itself, about four miles south, so you can make a proper historical afternoon of it. Go early in the day if you want solitude. Late afternoon light through those stone arches is genuinely special.
