Whinny Hill

The walk up Whinny Hill rewards you with proper views across Dumfries and Galloway - on a clear day you can see right across the rolling Lowlands towards the Solway Firth. It's not a mountain; it's a modest peak that takes the better part of an hour from Landis, but that's precisely why it works. The terrain is straightforward enough for families with older children, though younger ones might find the climb tedious.

What makes it worthwhile is the payoff. Stand at the top and the landscape spreads out in a way that makes you understand why this corner of Scotland matters - pastoral, layered, genuinely quiet. On weekends you might see a few other walkers; midweek it feels like you've found something locals use and tourists skip.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks clustered near Landis - Landis Farm CL, Criffel View, or Marthrown of Mabie are all within two miles - this is a natural morning or late-afternoon outing. It's free, obviously, and you'll want proper footwear on damp grass. Allow two hours including the descent and time to linger at the summit. Don't expect facilities at the top; bring water and a snack.

Go when the weather's settled. On a grey, drizzly day - which happens - you'll see mist and little else. Worth the effort when conditions are right, less so when they're not.
