The coastal wetland behind Borth village is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for, which is precisely why it works so well. Dolau Bach y Borth is a modest nature reserve where freshwater pools meet saltmarsh, creating the kind of habitat that has birdwatchers pressing their binoculars to their faces from dawn onwards. You're looking at lapwings, redshanks, and if you're lucky, the occasional marsh harrier cutting across the water.

It's not a destination that demands hours of your time - a proper walk round takes forty minutes, maybe an hour if you're stopping to sketch or photograph. The paths are straightforward enough, though they can get squelchy after rain, so decent boots are essential. The real appeal here is the quiet. West Wales gets busy in summer, but this reserve absorbs barely anyone. You might see a handful of other visitors, genuinely might see none.
