Devil's Tor

The scramble up Devil's Tor is exactly what it promises - steep, a bit exposed, and absolutely worth the twenty minutes of effort. You're looking at a proper rocky peak on Dartmoor, just outside Tavistock, where the granite outcrops demand a bit of scrambling but reward you with views across the moor that frankly explain why people come back here again and again.

It's not a casual stroll. The path pitches up sharply, and the final push to the summit involves using your hands. Kids aged ten and up will manage it fine if they're used to hills; younger ones might need a hand up the rockier bits. That said, the whole thing takes less than an hour from car park to viewpoint and back, so it's perfect if you're based nearby and fancy something bracing but not all-consuming.

The tor itself is a relatively small summit, so once you've caught your breath and taken photos across Dartmoor you're free to head back down. Weather matters here - when mist rolls in, it's genuinely disorientating, so pick a clear day. It's free, naturally, and there's decent parking nearby.
