Detling Hill

The walk up Detling Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Maidstone, and it's genuinely one of those spots where the effort pays off. You're looking at proper views across the Weald once you reach the top - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see why people bothered walking here for centuries. The hill itself isn't much to look at, no grand monuments or fancy installations, just open grassland and the kind of wind that keeps things bracing year-round.

It's ideal for walkers who want a quick leg-stretch without committing to a full-day hike. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble about the slope on the way back down. The views are better than the walk itself, if I'm honest - it's worth doing once, but it's not the sort of place you'd plan a day around.

If you're staying at Oak View Holiday Park just down the road, it's practically on your doorstep and costs nothing to access. The nearby glamping options at Kits Coty or Chegworth Mill are also close enough for a morning outing. Come when the weather's settled - on a grey day with drizzle, Detling Hill is just a muddy slope with no view. Sunrise or early evening light makes a real difference to the experience. Allow an hour total if you include the views at the top.
