Gore Wood

Walking into Gore Wood near Maidstone, you're immediately wrapped in proper woodland - the kind with a real floor of leaves and fallen branches that crunch underfoot. It's a working forest rather than a manicured park, which means it feels genuinely wild despite being just outside town.

The wood itself isn't massive, so you won't need a full day here, but it's excellent for a couple of hours of wandering if you're after a break from the caravan. The paths are manageable and there's enough variation to keep things interesting - some open sections where the canopy breaks up, denser areas where the light gets filtered and greenish. Bird life is decent too, especially if you time it right in the early morning or late afternoon.

It works well for families with older kids and dogs - younger ones might find it a bit samey after a while, if I'm honest. Serious walkers will likely treat it as a warm-up or cool-down rather than a destination in itself. The nearest caravan bases are Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite at 1.4 miles away (highly rated, so it does fill up) and Chegworth Mill Glamping at 3.7 miles if you fancy something a bit different.

Go when the weather's been dry - it gets boggy in patches otherwise and your shoes will suffer. Early autumn is when it looks best, with proper colour starting to come through. Free to access, completely open, no faffing about with opening hours. Pair it with a walk into Maidstone town centre if you need proper facilities or a coffee that isn't from a flask.
