Danes Dyke Nature Reserve

An Iron Age defensive ditch running across the Flamborough headland, Danes Dyke is one of those walks that rewards you with proper coastal views without requiring a full day's commitment. The earthwork itself stretches for about two miles, slicing across the peninsula between two cliffs - you can see where it was dug, how deep it runs, and genuinely feel the effort involved in building something so substantial by hand. Most visitors tackle a section of it rather than the whole thing, and that's sensible.

Walkers will get the most from this. The path follows the ridge with sea on both sides in places, and the chalk grassland either side of the dyke supports decent wildflowers in spring and summer. It's not technically demanding, though the clifftop sections demand respect and aren't ideal if you've got very young children in tow. Allow ninety minutes to two hours if you're doing a reasonable stretch without rushing.

What makes it work as a holiday destination bit is the location itself. Bridlington's five minutes away if you're staying at one of the caravan parks - Bridlington Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is right there, or Haven Thornwick Bay if you want more facilities. You're combining actual historical structure with a proper clifftop walk and coastal air. It's free, accessible year-round, and best visited outside school holidays when you won't be queueing behind groups. Spring and early autumn offer the clearest views and lightest crowds.
