Cyfrwy

The saddle between two peaks is what you're after here, and Cyfrwy delivers that proper mountain experience without the commitment of a full day's slog. It sits in the Cader Idris range near Dolgellau, and from the col itself the views back down the valley are genuinely arresting - you can see why walkers bother with this one.

The walk up is a fair push but nothing that requires technical gear. Most people approach from the Dolgellau side, and it takes a couple of hours to reach the saddle depending on your fitness and how much you stop to catch your breath. The rocky terrain is genuine mountain walking, not a stroll, so proper boots matter here.

Who gets the most from it? Anyone who wants to feel like they've done some proper hillwalking without needing to be a climber. Families with teenagers will manage fine if they're used to uneven ground. Young kids will find it hard going. Solo walkers and groups of friends come here a lot because it's challenging enough to feel earned but not so extreme that you need a guide.

If you're staying at Graig Wen Camping or Llwyn yr Helm just down the valley, Cyfrwy makes a proper day out. You could easily combine it with other Cader Idris peaks if you're feeling ambitious, or do the walk and spend the afternoon in Dolgellau itself. There's no facilities up there - bring water and something to eat. Go in decent weather; mist rolls in quickly and the mountain stops being rewarding fast.
