Cwm Moch Ancient Settlement

Clambering up the hillside near Talsarnau, you'll find yourself surrounded by the scattered remains of what was once a thriving Iron Age settlement. Cwm Moch isn't the sort of place where everything's been tidied up and labelled for you - it's raw archaeology, and that's precisely what makes it worthwhile. The site consists of the earthen banks of ancient roundhouses, some barely visible beneath the grass and heather, others still forming distinct circular depressions in the landscape.

This is one for proper history enthusiasts rather than casual walkers. Children might struggle with the lack of obvious features - there's no visitor centre, no reconstructions, nothing concrete to hold their attention for long. But if you're the type who enjoys piecing together how people actually lived two thousand years ago, you'll find it genuinely absorbing. The views across the valley aren't bad either.

Allow an hour or so to wander and take in the site properly. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and no formal opening times - you just turn up. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though it gets a bit steep towards the top. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Woodlands, Castle View, or Min-y-don - it makes a decent half-day outing when the weather's decent. Pair it with a walk through the Snowdonia valleys proper, and you've got a solid morning sorted. Don't expect Instagram moments. Do expect to use your imagination.
