Croxton Trail Park

Gravel paths wind through modest woodland and open grassland at this low-key spot on Winsford's outskirts. Croxton Trail Park won't win any prizes for dramatic scenery, but it does what it says on the tin - provides a decent stretch of leg-stretching territory with a few picnic tables scattered about for good measure.

Families with restless children will find it properly useful. The trails are buggy-friendly and there's enough space for kids to run about without disappearing into the wilderness. Dog walkers seem to make good use of it too, judging by the well-worn paths.

Expect a pleasant hour's ramble rather than an all-day adventure. The woodland sections offer decent shade on hot days, while the more open areas give you views across the Cheshire countryside - nothing spectacular, mind you, but agreeable enough. Bring your own refreshments as there's no café or facilities to speak of.

Location-wise, it's handy if you're staying at one of the several caravan parks dotted around this part of Cheshire. Lakeside Caravan Park and Thornley Leisure are both under three miles away, making it a straightforward morning outing when the weather's decent and you fancy a change from the park facilities.
