Bottom Flash

Two hundred metres from Winsford town centre, this former salt working has transformed into an unexpectedly peaceful lake that locals guard as their own secret. Bottom Flash sits in a shallow depression created by subsidence from the area's mining heritage, now filled with clear water that reflects the Cheshire sky.

Anglers dominate the scene here, casting lines for roach, perch and the occasional pike. The fishing is genuinely good - I watched one chap land three decent-sized perch in twenty minutes. Families occasionally appear for a gentle stroll around the water's edge, though there's no playground or café to keep restless children entertained for long.

This isn't a destination in itself, more a lovely spot to pause if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Lakeside or Thornley Leisure. The path around the water takes fifteen minutes at most, but it's a proper breath of fresh air after the bustle of Winsford's shopping streets. Bird watchers might spot moorhens and the odd heron, though don't expect anything exotic.

Access appears to be free and the area feels safe enough, though parking is limited to roadside spaces. Best combined with a trip into Winsford itself rather than making a special journey.
