Winsford Salt Stacks (aka The Seven Sisters) art installation

Seven enormous white cubes rise from the Cheshire landscape like something from a sci-fi film - except they're made of salt, and they're real. The Winsford Salt Stacks, officially dubbed "The Seven Sisters," started life as an art installation but have become a proper local landmark. You're essentially looking at colossal sculptural forms created from compressed salt waste, transformed into something that catches the light beautifully and makes you question what industrial heritage actually means.

It's the sort of thing you stop the car for rather than plan a whole afternoon around. The visual impact is immediate and striking, especially when the sun hits them right. Photography enthusiasts will have a field day. Kids find them amusing in a "but why are they there?" kind of way, though they won't hold attention for long unless you're into talking about the mining history underneath.

Winsford itself sits at the heart of Cheshire's salt country, so this installation makes proper sense geographically. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Lakeside is virtually on the doorstep at 0.6 miles, or Acorns if you fancy something slightly further afield - this is worth a ten-minute detour while exploring the area. The site appears to be freely accessible, though do check locally before heading out.

Best visited in decent weather when the white surfaces really sing against the sky. Don't expect visitor facilities or café stops. It's an object to see, appreciate, and move on from - which is precisely what makes it work.
