Crow Tor

The rocks on top of Crow Tor catch the light in a way that makes you stop and stare. It's not a massive peak - more of a proper scramble than a serious climb - but the granite outcrops at the summit feel genuinely wild, especially when the mist rolls across Dartmoor. From up here you can see clear across to Kit Hill on the Cornish border, and on a clear day the views stretch for miles. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're walking from Tavistock. The moorland around it is boggy in places, so decent boots matter.

This works best for walkers with some experience on rough terrain. Kids aged ten and up will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the scramble fiddly. The moorland walk is easy enough initially, but the final approach needs careful footing. There's no admission fee - it's just Dartmoor - and you can park near the village of Princetown and head out from there, or approach from Tavistock itself if you fancy a longer day.

If you're based at Dartmoor National Park or Langstone Manor, Crow Tor sits perfectly as a half-day objective. It's remote enough to feel like an adventure without eating up your whole afternoon. The granite summit is genuinely atmospheric, and there's real satisfaction in picking your way over the rocks. Weather changes fast up here though, so check conditions before heading out - Dartmoor can turn bleak quickly.
