Crosland Hill

The church at Crosland Hill sits high above Holmfirth, commanding views across the Pennine moorland that stretch for miles on a clear day. You won't find gilded interiors or centuries of architectural evolution here; what you get instead is a functional, well-maintained church that speaks to the no-nonsense character of West Yorkshire.

The walk up rewards you with genuine panoramic views, and on decent weather days it's the kind of spot where you understand why people settled these hills despite the exposure. The church itself is small enough to take in within twenty minutes, but the surrounding moorland is where you'd want to linger. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Holme Valley Camping is closest at 3.5 miles - Crosland Hill makes a decent leg-stretcher between the park and a proper moorland ramble. Combine it with a walk down into Holmfirth town itself for tea and a proper Slices cake. The site appears to be unmanned, so you'll need to check locally for current opening arrangements, but access from the approach road is straightforward. Worth an hour of your time if you're in the area; less essential if you're pushing through to bigger attractions elsewhere in Yorkshire.
