Cringlebarrow Hill

The walk up Cringlebarrow Hill is a proper leg-stretcher, but the effort pays off with views across Morecambe Bay that'll stop you in your tracks. It's not a massive summit - you're looking at decent fell walking rather than mountaineering - but from the top you get that genuine sense of having earned your vantage point.

This one's for walkers who know what they're doing. The terrain demands respect, especially in wet weather, and it's not the sort of place you'd bring young children expecting an easy afternoon out. An hour each way at a steady pace is realistic, maybe longer if you're stopping to take in the views and eat a sandwich. The reward is solitude most days - it's not on the coach tour circuit like some Lakeland peaks.

Milnthorpe sits just below, which means you're well positioned for a park-based holiday. Fell End Holiday Park is barely a mile and a half away, making this a perfect morning walk before heading back for lunch. The proximity to several other parks in the area - Holgates, Bay View, Once Upon a Fell - means you could base yourself anywhere nearby and have this as part of a broader exploring itinerary.

Go early on a clear day. Midweek mornings are best if you want the hillside to yourself. The view justifies the climb, though it's not one for those after an easy amble.
