Hanging Hill

The walk up Hanging Hill rewards you with proper Lakeland views without the crowds you'd battle on something like Catbells. It's a modest peak near Milnthorpe, nothing that'll take your breath away in terms of height, but the vistas across the Kent estuary and towards Morecambe Bay are genuinely worth the leg work.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble. Most people manage it in under two hours return, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to take photos. The path is well-trodden but can be boggy in places - proper fell boots aren't overkill. Families with older kids will find it manageable; younger ones might struggle with the sustained gradient. Walkers after a decent viewpoint without committing to a full day on the fells will get exactly what they came for.

Free to walk, as with most of the Lake District's fell tops. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water and something to eat. Early morning is best if you want to avoid the handful of others who know about it.

Stay at Fell End Holiday Park or Once Upon a Fell - both within a couple of miles - and you've got a cracking base for exploring this quieter corner of Cumbria. It's worth combining with walks around the estuary or a potter through Milnthorpe itself rather than making it a standalone trip. Not Instagram-famous enough to ruin itself with visitors, and that's precisely why it's worth going.
