Crib-Y-Rhiw

The walk up Crib-Y-Rhiw from Dolgellau isn't long, but it's proper steep and relentless once you commit to it. This peak sits just outside town and rewards you with views across the Mawddach estuary that justify the huffing and puffing on the way up. The path climbs through woodland before opening out onto moorland, and on a clear day you can see right across to Cadair Idris. Count on about two hours return if you're not rushing.

It's best suited to hill walkers with a bit of fitness rather than casual strollers - the gradient means it's not ideal for very young kids, though determined older children will manage fine. The summit itself is modest, all windswept and peaceful, and there's nothing commercial up there, which is exactly the point. Go early in the day to avoid the afternoon crowds and get the light right for photos.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Graig Wen and Hendre Mynach are close enough for a morning outing - this works brilliantly as a half-day activity. Dolgellau itself has a good food scene, so you can easily combine the walk with lunch in town. Winter brings mud and exposed wind, so spring through autumn is smarter. Free to access, obviously, and it'll cost you nothing but effort.
