Craig Y Castell

The walk up Craig y Castell from Dolgellau is proper Welsh mountain fare - steep, rewarding, and over far too quickly once you've crested the ridge. You're looking at a sharp climb through woodland that opens onto moorland, with views across the Cader Idris range that justify the huffing and puffing on the way up. Most people manage it in under two hours return, though you'll want longer if you're stopping to take photos or nursing sore legs on the descent.

It's the sort of peak that appeals to hikers who want a decent workout without committing to a full day in the hills. Families with older kids will find it manageable, but younger children might struggle with the relentless gradient - this isn't a gentle ramble. The summit itself is modest compared to its bigger neighbours, but that's part of the charm. You're not sharing it with coach parties.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so come prepared with water and something to eat. The nearest towns are Dolgellau itself, which has cafes and shops for pre or post-walk refuelling. If you're camping in the area, Graig Wen or Torrent Walk make sensible bases - both are within easy reach for an early start. The peak works perfectly as part of a longer exploration of the Cader Idris massif, or as a standalone outing if you've got an afternoon free. Weather can roll in quickly, so check conditions before you head out.
