Cowdray Castle

The ruins of Cowdray Castle rise out of the Sussex countryside near Petworth like something from a Gothic novel - all crumbling red sandstone and empty window frames. What you're looking at is a Tudor mansion that caught fire in 1793, leaving just the outer walls standing. It's genuinely atmospheric, the sort of place where you can wander through roofless rooms and imagine Tudor life playing out centuries ago.

The castle itself is free to explore and you can spend a good hour picking through the remains without rushing. The grounds are well-kept, which actually works in its favour - the contrast between manicured lawns and decaying stonework makes the whole thing feel more poignant somehow. History buffs will find plenty to absorb: there's a sizeable lake (built as a moat originally) and the layout of the place tells its own story if you pay attention. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull - there's not much hands-on activity, just wandering and looking - though the lake often has ducks and the open space lets them burn off energy.

If you're based at Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Woodfire at Westerlands, both within easy reach, Cowdray makes a solid half-day outing. It's worth combining with a walk around Petworth town or the grounds at Petworth House if you want a fuller day. The light's best in late afternoon when the sun hits those red walls. Go midweek if possible - weekends can get a bit busy with walkers.
