Counter Hill

Counter Hill sits just outside Keighley in North Yorkshire, offering one of those proper fell-top views that makes the walk up worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District showstoppers - but at around 400 metres it gives you genuine sightlines across the Pennines on a clear day. The moorland approach is straightforward, mostly worn paths across heather and grass, with the bracken thick enough in summer to slow you down a bit.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. If you're after a quick summit bag without the serious climbing, Counter Hill delivers. Most people allow between 90 minutes and two hours for the round trip from Keighley, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. Families with capable walkers will manage it fine; small children might find the climb a slog for minimal payoff. History buffs won't find much here, but that's not really the point.

Stay at one of the caravan parks clustered nearby - Draughton Heights and Brown Bank are both within walking distance - and you've got a solid base for exploring the moorland properly. The ground can be boggy in wet weather, so proper boots matter. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself, so come prepared. If you're camping in the area and want a half-day walk that gets you above the crowds, Counter Hill is worth the effort. On a dull day, though, you might wonder why you bothered.
