Pentley Hill

The walk up Pentley Hill rewards you with proper moorland views across the Aire Valley - nothing fancy, just honest Yorkshire fell country. It's a straightforward climb from Keighley, taking the best part of an hour if you're not rushing, and the summit itself sits at a decent height without being punishing.

What you get is a working hill rather than a showpiece. The views sweep across to Barden Fell and the surrounding moorland, and on a clear day you can pick out the wider Pennine landscape. It's the kind of place walkers actually use rather than ticking off a bucket list. The moorland can be boggy after rain - proper boot-testing terrain - so check the weather before you head out.

This works best for hill walkers who like their walks functional and unmanicured. Families with younger children might find the walk dull on the way down; there's no café at the top, no visitor centre, just you and the moor. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Brown Bank is barely half a mile away, or Olicana Park just up the road - this makes an excellent half-day outing without having to drive. It pairs well with exploring the Aire Valley's textile heritage around Keighley itself, or combining it with walks across to Bolton Abbey Estate, five miles south. Real moorland walking, no pretence.
