Windgate Nick

Standing at 412 metres, this modest peak on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales proper offers surprisingly good views across Wharfedale without the crowds you'll find on the bigger fells. The walk up from Embsay village takes about 45 minutes through typical moorland terrain - nothing too challenging, but you'll want proper boots if it's been wet.

Families with older children will manage fine, though toddlers might find the boggy sections tough going. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and gives you a proper sense of the Dales opening up to the north, with Pen-y-ghent visible on clear days. It's not spectacular, but it's honest walking country.

From the holiday parks around Keighley, this makes a decent half-day outing. Brown Bank Caravan Park sits closest at under a mile away, making it particularly handy for a morning climb. The beauty is in its accessibility - you can be up and down in a couple of hours, leaving plenty of time to explore nearby Bolton Abbey or take the kids to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.

Best tackled in decent weather when the views justify the effort. On a grey day, you might wonder why you bothered, but catch it right and you'll understand why the locals rate this unassuming little peak.
