Corner Wood

A proper walk through Sussex woodland, Corner Wood sits just outside Battle and delivers exactly what you'd want from a forest visit - decent trails, plenty of shade, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you bothered leaving home. The trees are mature and thick, which means even on a warm day it stays cool underfoot. You're moving through genuine woodland rather than a manicured park, so expect uneven ground and the occasional root to trip over.

It's ideal for families with kids old enough to manage a woodland walk without needing a pram-friendly path - the terrain isn't brutal, but it's not flat either. Walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds and the space to actually think. History types might be interested in the landscape itself; this corner of Sussex has serious medieval bones, and standing among these old trees you can sense that weight.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that we're aware of, so bring water and sort yourself out before you arrive. An hour to ninety minutes is realistic for a proper explore without rushing. The nearby holiday parks - Crowhurst Park is closest at under two miles - make it handy for a morning outing or afternoon break from the static caravan. It pairs well with Battle itself if you're doing the Abbey and want to stretch your legs in something wilder.

Go when the light's decent rather than at dusk. The woods can feel a bit isolated when they're dark.
