Constable's Tower

A squat stone tower rising from the Northumberland coast near Chathill, Constable's Tower is one of those places that rewards the curious wanderer. Built in the 16th century as a defensive structure, it's now a small museum that tells the story of coastal life and border warfare along this stretch of northeastern England. The tower itself is the real draw - you're climbing proper stone stairs in a genuine medieval fortification, not walking around a sanitised heritage centre.

Inside, the exhibits cover everything from how residents defended themselves during raids to the practicalities of living in such an exposed location. It's compact, which suits it. You won't spend hours here, but thirty minutes to an hour captures the essence. Free admission is a genuine bonus, and the surrounding coastal landscape does half the work for you - standing at the top, you understand immediately why anyone bothered to build a tower in the first place.

Historically minded visitors and walkers will get the most from this stop. Small children might find the narrow stairs frustrating rather than thrilling. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Coast and Castles Camping or Dunstan Hill are within six miles - it's a worthwhile morning visit before heading to bigger attractions like Bamburgh Castle or exploring the wider Northumberland coast. Go on a clear day if possible. The wind can be fierce, but that's rather the point of the thing.
