College Warren

College Warren is a proper fell walk that'll give you legs like tree trunks if you're not careful. It's a steep little peak near Bala in Gwynedd, and the real pull here is the view across the valley - on a clear day you can see for miles over moorland that looks like it hasn't changed much in centuries. The walk itself isn't overly long but it's relentless on the way up, which is why most people tackle it as a half-day job rather than a full expedition.

The sort who'll get the most from it are proper walkers, not casual strollers. If you're staying at Tyn Cornel Camping just down the road, it's an ideal morning or early afternoon push before settling back at the campsite for a brew. Don't expect facilities at the summit - this is bare moorland, so bring water and a packed lunch if you want to sit and take in the views properly. Wind can be vicious up here, so waterproofs aren't optional even when the forecast looks promising.

It's free, obviously - you're walking up a Welsh hillside, not paying for the privilege. Allow a good couple of hours if you're not particularly fit, less if you're a regular hill-goer. Best tackled in spring or early autumn when the weather's more predictable. Summer gets busy, and winter will test your commitment to any view.
