Coed Y Gribin

The walk up Coed Y Gribin from Dolgellau is steep, short, and absolutely worth an hour of your time. You're climbing through dense woodland - proper forest, the kind where the path narrows and tree roots grip the ground like arthritic fingers. The gradient is relentless but mercifully brief, maybe twenty minutes to the summit if you're moving at a decent pace.

What makes it worth the huffing is the view. From the top you're looking out across the Mawddach estuary and the surrounding peaks of Snowdonia. On a clear day - and you'll want to time it for clear - it's genuinely arresting. The peak itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but that's partly the appeal. You're not queuing or scrambling over rock; you're simply standing in a wood looking at Wales properly laid out beneath you.

This works best for walkers who want a proper climb without committing to a full day. Families with primary-school age kids will manage it, though younger children might struggle with the steepness. History buffs won't find much here - it's not that kind of walk - but anyone after a quick Snowdonia fix will find exactly what they need.

Dolgellau itself is walking capital territory, and if you're staying at one of the local parks - Graig Wen is closest at a mile and a half out - Coed Y Gribin makes a natural morning or late afternoon outing. Pair it with something more ambitious if you've got the legs for it.
