Coed Rhyd-fach

Thick woodland surrounds you the moment you step into Coed Rhyd-fach, a proper forest that doesn't announce itself with signs or visitor centres - just trees, paths, and the occasional sound of water running through. Near Borth in Ceredigion, it's the sort of place where you can actually lose an hour without trying, which isn't easy to do these days.

The forest itself is managed woodland with a mix of conifers and deciduous trees. Walking through it feels properly remote despite being close enough to the coast. The main draw is simply the walking - there are paths that take you deeper in, some following streams, others opening onto small clearings. On a wet day it's atmospheric in the way only Welsh forests manage. On a dry one, it's just lovely and green.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might manage an hour before the questions start. It's not a destination with facilities or waymarked trails you can follow with your eyes closed - bring a map or be prepared to backtrack. The nearest decent-sized town is Borth, which has the basics but isn't exactly a hub.

It's free access, no visitors' centre, no charge. Just show up. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy something quiet. Don't expect Instagram-ready views - expect peace and decent woodland walking.
