Coed Cyrnol

Dense woodland carpets this corner of Anglesey, offering proper respite from the island's often windswept coastline. Coed Cyrnol sits just outside Pentraeth, a substantial forest that feels surprisingly wild for somewhere so accessible.

Walking here is the main draw - established paths wind through mixed woodland where oak and birch create a decent canopy even in winter. The forest floor comes alive with bluebells in late spring, though any time from April through October works well for a good stomp through the trees. Families with younger children might find some paths a bit uneven, but there's enough variety to suit most ages.

Bird watchers do well here. I've spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches and the occasional red kite circling overhead. The relative quiet - once you're away from the car park - makes it a lovely spot for anyone wanting to decompress after a day at Beaumaris or the busier coastal attractions.

From nearby holiday parks like Mornest Caravan Park or Kingsbridge Caravan Park, it's an easy drive when you fancy swapping sand between your toes for leaves crunching underfoot. Allow at least an hour for a decent walk, though you could easily spend half a day here if you bring a picnic. The forest feels properly Welsh - no manicured paths or visitor centres, just good honest woodland that does exactly what it says on the tin.
