Clyne Golf Club

The Clyne Golf Club sits just outside Swansea and is one of those proper Welsh courses that'll test your swing without demanding you're a low-handicapper. It's a members' club primarily, though visitors can usually arrange a round if you book ahead and have a handicap certificate to hand.

The course itself runs across 18 holes and makes good use of the rolling Carmarthenshire terrain. You'll get decent views across the valley, and the layout keeps you thinking - it's not just whack and chase. The greens are well-maintained, and the clubhouse is the traditional sort, all wood panelling and a bar where members actually seem to know each other.

This is for golfers, really. If you're not interested in knocking a ball around a field for four hours, there's nothing much else to do here. But if you're staying at Gateway Resort nearby and you've got your handicap card, it's worth ringing ahead to see if they can fit you in. Expect to pay green fees - the website has details, though they're not always kept bang up to date.

Timing-wise, allow a full morning or afternoon. The walk between holes is manageable, though it's not flat, so decent shoes are a must. Come during the week if you can - weekends get busier with members.
