Moorlakes Wood Scout Centre

Moorlakes Wood is a proper working nature reserve just outside Swansea, run by the Scout movement but open to the public. It's woodland at its most honest - not a manicured tourist attraction, but genuine habitat with paths winding through mature trees and the occasional clearing where you might spot birds or small mammals if you're quiet enough.

The reserve itself is free to access and works best for people who actually enjoy walking without interpretation boards at every turn. Families with young children will find it pleasant for an hour or so; older kids with any interest in wildlife will get more from it. Birdwatchers and quiet walkers should allow two hours minimum to do it justice.

Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon gives you the best chance of seeing anything living. Avoid midday when everything's sleeping off the heat. The woodland floor can get muddy, especially after rain, so decent boots matter.

If you're staying at Blackhills Leisure or any of the caravan parks dotted around the Gower Peninsula - Oxwich is your nearest at five miles - Moorlakes slots nicely into a morning before heading to the coast. It's not a destination in itself, but as a quick leg-stretcher between Swansea and the beaches at Three Cliffs Bay or Oxwich, it does the job. Combine it with a proper walk elsewhere on the Gower and you've got a decent day.
