Choinneachain Hill

The walk up Choinneachain Hill from near Crieff takes you through proper Perthshire moorland - all heather and wide skies. It's not a massive summit at around 2,300 feet, but the views across the Tay Valley are genuinely worth the effort, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the Ochil Hills stretching across the horizon.

This is walkers' territory. The path isn't complicated, but it's steady going and you'll want decent boots. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, longer if you're taking it leisurely or stopping for photos. Spring and early summer are best - the moorland colours are at their best and the midges haven't arrived yet.

Families with older kids will manage fine if they're used to hills. Younger ones might find it a slog without much to break up the walk, though the views from the top are genuinely impressive once you arrive. There's a real sense of remoteness up there, even though Crieff is just below.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Comrie Croft and the others are all within a short drive - this makes a cracking half-day excursion. It's the sort of walk you can do without any special equipment, just proper footwear and a water bottle. The moorland itself is free access, so there's no admission charge or opening hours to worry about. It slots nicely into a Perthshire holiday where you're mixing proper hill walking with exploring the villages and glens round about.
