Carn Chòis

The walk up Carn Chòis from Crieff is properly rewarding - nothing too technical, just a steady tramp through open moorland that gets your legs working. The summit sits at 2,500 feet, which means the views across Perthshire get genuinely impressive once you're up there. On a clear day you can see for miles, right across to the Grampians. The route itself takes about two hours for a fit walker, maybe closer to three if you're going at a leisurely pace with kids in tow. It's the sort of walk that feels like an achievement without being intimidating.

What makes it worthwhile is the solitude. You won't fight crowds here like you do on Ben Ledi or other more famous peaks. The terrain is straightforward moorland - no scrambling, no rock hopping - which suits families and casual walkers far better than the heroic stuff. Bring waterproofs though. This is Scotland and the weather turns on a sixpence.

If you're staying at Comrie Croft or one of the other parks scattered around Comrie, this is genuinely worth the drive. Crieff is only a few miles on, and the whole outing fits neatly into a half-day adventure. The town itself has decent cafes for a post-walk coffee. Free to access, of course - it's a Scottish hill. Just park sensibly near the trailhead and crack on.
