Dunruchan Hill

The walk up Dunruchan Hill near Crieff rewards you with proper Perthshire views - rolling moorland falling away in three directions, and on a clear day you can pick out the Ochils strung out to the south. It's not a slog. The climb from the valley floor takes about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly, and the path is straightforward enough without being boring.

Who benefits most? Walkers after a half-day outing without the commitment of a full Munro, though the hill sits just under the magic 3,000ft mark. Families with legs can manage it fine - kids won't hit the wall halfway up. History types won't find much at the summit itself, but the bones of the landscape tell their own story: you're looking at land shaped by Highland cattle droving routes and old estate boundaries.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, typical for Scottish hills. Go early morning in summer if you want decent light for the views without fighting the midges that can be relentless by late June. Winter's clearer for visibility but demands proper kit - the ground can get boggy fast after rain.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Comrie Croft and Comrie Holiday Park are your closest options, both within four miles - this works as a cracking morning circuit before exploring Crieff itself. The town's a decent enough base for the southern Highlands, and the hill sits perfectly for breaking up a week of heavier hillwalking elsewhere in the region.
